Getting started

Turning 65 in Greenville, TX

Turning 65 starts a clock, whether you grew up in Greenville or settled in Royse City or Caddo Mills a few years ago. Your Medicare sign-up window is seven months long. It opens three months before the month you turn 65, includes that month, and runs three months past it.

Get your application in early, during those first three months, and Medicare kicks in on the first of your birthday month. Wait longer and you'll start later. Most people do best by starting to plan at about 64 and a half.

  • A seven-month sign-up window around your birthday
  • Separate rules if you still have a job
  • A single six-month Medigap window with no health questions
  • Free, no-pressure help from our team

Timeline

What to do, month by month

  1. 1

    Three to six months ahead

Decide whether Part B starts now or waits because a current job covers you. Begin listing your doctors and medications.

  2. 2

    Three months ahead

If enrollment isn't automatic for you, apply for Part A and Part B through Social Security. If you already get benefits, your card comes on its own.

  3. 3

    Two months ahead

Pick a route: Original Medicare with Medigap and Part D, or a Medicare Advantage plan. See which plans include your Greenville doctors and any specialists you see in Rockwall, Garland or Dallas.

  4. 4

    One month ahead

Submit your applications so the cards arrive in time. Make sure your current coverage doesn't stop before Medicare starts.

  5. 5

    After your birthday

Once Part B starts, your six-month Medigap window opens. During it, your health can't change your price or whether an insurer accepts you.

Still working?

Coverage from a Dallas-area employer changes the timing

Maybe you still make the I-30 commute to a job in Dallas, Garland or Rockwall. Does your employer plan, or your spouse's, cover 20 or more workers? Then you can usually keep that plan and delay Part B with no penalty. Part A costs most people nothing, so they take it anyway. HSA savers are the exception. Once any part of Medicare starts, you can't add money to an HSA.

Leaving the job starts an eight-month window to sign up for Part B. Neither COBRA nor retiree coverage buys you extra time, whatever the HR packet seems to say. Missing it is one of the costliest Medicare mistakes there is. Run your own numbers in our Part B penalty calculator.

Working for a company under 20 people?

Then Medicare normally pays first once you turn 65. If you skip Part B, the job plan may refuse bills it expected Medicare to cover. Talk to your benefits office first.

Choosing

The two routes

  • Original Medicare plus Medigap and Part D: almost every doctor who takes Medicare, more per month, very few surprise bills
  • Medicare Advantage: less per month, a set network, copays at each visit, and dental and vision on many plans
  • Whichever you pick, the monthly Part B premium still applies
  • Ask a licensed agent to price each route, at no cost to you

Our pages on Medigap, Medicare Advantage and Part D drug plans go into more detail, and the Medicare checklist is a good first step. If your first window slips by, Annual Open Enrollment still lets you make changes from October 15 to December 7 each year.

Turning 65 around Hunt County

We work with new enrollees across Hunt County, from Commerce and Wolfe City to Quinlan and Royse City. Where your doctors are shapes the decision. Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville handles most local hospital care, and Hunt Regional also has clinics in several nearby towns. Many people here travel to Rockwall, Garland or Dallas for specialists, so make sure any plan you consider reaches those doctors. If you go to the Greenville VA Clinic, think about how VA care fits with Medicare before choosing a plan. Find your town listed on the service areas page. Common questions

Turning 65 questions in Greenville

How does the Initial Enrollment Period work?
You get seven months in all. That's the three months leading up to the month you turn 65, that month, and the three that follow. Sign up in the first three and Medicare begins on the first day of your birthday month.
Will Medicare enroll me automatically?
It will if you're already getting Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits. Medicare puts you in Part A and Part B and mails your card roughly three months ahead of your birthday. Not drawing benefits yet? Then you apply with Social Security on your own. You can do it at ssa.gov, over the phone or in person at a local office.
I still commute to a job in Dallas. Can I put off Part B?
Most of the time, yes. It works when you or your spouse still work and get group health coverage from an employer with 20 or more employees. When that job or its coverage stops, an eight-month clock starts for penalty-free Part B enrollment. The Part B penalty calculator shows what a delay could cost.
What does Part B cost in 2026?
Most people pay $202.90 a month in 2026, and the deductible for the year is $283. Higher earners owe more. The amount depends on the income on your tax return from two years before.
Is there a time Medigap insurers can't ask about my health?
Yes. Your six-month window opens in the first month you're at least 65 and have Part B. Until it closes, no insurer can refuse you or raise your price over a health condition. Texas has no yearly window to fall back on later, so make good use of it. Read Medigap in Greenville.
Where can I get free, unbiased Medicare counseling in Texas?
Texas offers free counseling through HICAP (the Health Information, Counseling and Advocacy Program of Texas). Call 800-252-9240 to reach a counselor. 1-800-MEDICARE is also free.
