Medicare in Wolfe City

Medicare notes for Wolfe City

Wolfe City grew up in the 1860s or 1870s around a mill that J. Pinckney Wolfe built near Oyster Creek, and it incorporated in 1887. State Highway 34 runs through the middle of town as Santa Fe Street, south 17 miles to Greenville and north toward Honey Grove. State Highway 11 crosses it on the north side of town on its way to Commerce, about 13 miles southeast. The Martindale Feed Mill is a town landmark. Wolfe City had 1,399 residents in the 2020 census.

Wolfe City has no hospital, so emergencies and hospital stays usually mean Hunt Regional Medical Center Greenville. For minor problems, Hunt Regional Urgent Care Commerce on Live Oak St. is closer. Veterans enrolled in VA care can use the Greenville VA Clinic or the Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham, both part of VA North Texas. The VA does not bill Medicare, so many veterans keep Medicare for care they get outside the VA.

If you see doctors in Greenville, Commerce or Bonham, check each one in a Medicare Advantage plan's network before you join. Plans are approved county by county, and a Bonham doctor sits across the line in Fannin County, so a Hunt County plan may not include that office. Medigap Plan G or Plan N pays at any doctor's office in the country that accepts Medicare. Networks change every January, so a fresh look each fall is a good habit.

The Wolfe City Senior Center meets at the Wolfe City Housing Authority, 870 Green Acres, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with lunch at noon. Call (903) 454-1444, ext. 14, to reserve a meal. The Connection, run by Senior Center Resources and Public Transit, gives riders 60 and up free trips to medical visits and senior center meals. The Wolfe City Public Library on East Williams St. answers at (903) 496-7311. For free Medicare counseling, call HICAP at 800-252-9240.

Common questions

Questions we hear from Wolfe City

Is there a senior meal site in Wolfe City?
Yes. The Wolfe City Senior Center serves lunch at noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Wolfe City Housing Authority, 870 Green Acres. Call (903) 454-1444, ext. 14, to reserve a meal.
Can I use VA care and Medicare at the same time?
Yes. They work separately, and the VA does not bill Medicare. Many veterans keep Medicare so they can see doctors and use hospitals outside the VA. We'll help you decide how much Medicare coverage makes sense next to your VA benefits.
What are the dates for changing Medicare plans in Wolfe City?
From October 15 through December 7, everyone with Medicare may switch plans or drop drug coverage. That's Annual Enrollment. People who are in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1 then get one more change before March 31, and going back to Original Medicare counts.
