Medicare notes for Celeste
The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway laid out Celeste in 1886, about three miles north of Kingston. Kingston's leaders had refused to offer the railroad anything to come their way, so the line passed them by, and several merchants moved up to the new town. Celeste was named for the wife of a Santa Fe official and incorporated in 1900. By the mid-1890s it had three cotton gins. Audie Murphy, the most decorated American soldier of World War II, was born south of town and lived in Celeste for a time. The town had 809 residents in the 2020 census.
Celeste has no hospital, so most medical care means heading southeast on U.S. 69 to Greenville. Hunt Regional Medical Center Greenville, on Joe Ramsey Blvd., has a 24-hour emergency department, and the system runs family and specialty clinics nearby, like Hunt Regional Family Medicine Greenville at 4501 Joe Ramsey Blvd. Veterans enrolled in VA care can use the Greenville VA Clinic on Jack Finney Blvd. for checkups, lab work and prescriptions.
In a town this size, where your doctors are often decides the plan. A Medicare Advantage plan often has a low monthly premium and may add dental or vision, but it works through a network. Make sure your Greenville doctor and any specialist are in it. Medigap Plan G or Plan N has a higher premium, yet any doctor who takes Medicare will accept it, with no network to track. If you see doctors in Sherman or Dallas as well as Greenville, that freedom may count for more.
The Connection, run by Senior Center Resources and Public Transit, lists Celeste in its service area. Rides run weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Riders 60 and up pay nothing for medical, pharmacy and senior center meal trips, and once a week they can ride free to the grocery store. Call (903) 454-1444 a day ahead. Meals on Wheels delivers to homebound seniors in rural Hunt County, and the Greenville Senior Center on Lee St. serves lunch on weekdays. For free Medicare counseling, call HICAP at 800-252-9240.
