Medicare Part B Late Enrollment Penalty Calculator

Pass on Part B when you're first eligible, without coverage from a current job (yours or a spouse's), and Medicare will add a late enrollment penalty. It's tacked onto each monthly premium, and most people pay it for life. If you're retiring from a job in the Dallas area, check your dates before you leave the employer plan.

Use the calculator for a quick number. Then read the notes under it to see if the penalty even applies to you.

  • An extra 10% for each full year you could have had Part B
  • For most people, the charge lasts as long as Part B does
  • Coverage from a current job, yours or a spouse's, can shield you

Treat this as a rough guide. Every full 12 months you were eligible for Part B and didn't sign up adds 10% of the standard premium to your bill. That extra charge usually stays for as long as you keep Part B.

Context

When the penalty applies, and when it doesn't

No penalty applies while you're covered by a group health plan from current work, either your own or your spouse's. COBRA, retiree coverage and marketplace plans don't count. After the job ends, an eight-month Special Enrollment Period lets you add Part B penalty-free. If you're retiring from a Dallas, Garland or Rockwall employer, mark that eight-month deadline on the calendar the day your coverage ends.

Part D carries its own late penalty. Thinking of putting off any part of Medicare? Read our pages on Part D drug plans and common mistakes first. Free, unbiased counseling in Texas is available from HICAP (the Health Information, Counseling and Advocacy Program of Texas) at 800-252-9240.
