Medicare Annual Open Enrollment in Greenville, TX

Once a year, almost anyone with Medicare can switch plans for any reason. That time is Annual Open Enrollment, or AEP. It lasts from October 15 to December 7, and your new coverage starts January 1.

Expect a full mailbox and plenty of TV ads while it's on. Feel free to ignore them. Focus on your own medicines and doctors, then make one choice when you're ready.

  • October 15 through December 7, every year
  • Changes start January 1
  • Check your prescriptions and doctors before anything else

Share your current plan, prescriptions and doctors. A licensed insurance agent compares next year's costs on the plans we represent in your Greenville ZIP code and calls you back during business hours. If you're already in the right plan, we'll say so.

What's allowed

Changes you can make during AEP

  • Leave Original Medicare and join an Advantage plan
  • Leave an Advantage plan and go back to Original Medicare
  • Swap your Advantage plan for a different one
  • Start, stop or switch a stand-alone Part D plan

Medigap runs on a separate track

AEP doesn't cover Medicare Supplement plans. A Medigap application can go in any month. The difference is that health questions are fair game once your first six-month Medigap window is over.

Prepare

Getting ready for your fall review

  1. 1

Open the Annual Notice of Change

It should reach you by the end of September. In one place it lists the coming year's changes to premium, copays, drug tiers and network.

  2. 2

    Update your drug list

Doses change and new drugs get added. Nothing shapes next year's cost more than what you take today. Our Part D page shows what to look at.

  3. 3

    Check your doctors and hospital

Use the directory for the coming year, not the current one. Look for your Greenville doctor, Hunt Regional, and each specialist you visit in Rockwall, Garland or Dallas.

  4. 4

    Settle it by Thanksgiving

December 7 is firm. Waiting until the last few days leaves no time to correct an error.

Local networks

What tends to change for Hunt County plans

For Greenville-area plans, the first thing to confirm each fall is Hunt Regional, including its Royse City medical center if that's closer to you. Then check the plan's reach into Garland, Dallas and Rockwall, where many Hunt County residents see specialists. Those doctors can join or leave a network from one year to the next. Veterans may also use the Greenville VA Clinic alongside a plan. Look up each doctor and hospital by name in the directory for the coming year. The communities we cover are on our service areas page.

Other windows

If December 7 has come and gone

Already in an Advantage plan? You get a second chance from January 1 through March 31. You may switch to a different Advantage plan during those months, or go back to Original Medicare and add a Part D plan. Once March 31 passes, you'd need a Special Enrollment Period. Leaving your plan's service area or losing job-based coverage can open one.

New to Medicare? Then the window you need is your Initial Enrollment Period around turning 65. Unsure which one you're in? See switching your plan.

Questions

Open Enrollment in Greenville: common questions

When is Open Enrollment?
Each year it opens October 15 and closes December 7. Whatever you choose kicks in on January 1.
I like my plan. Must I take any action?
Not usually, since most plans roll over on their own. Even so, look over the Annual Notice of Change that arrives in the mail. Next year's premium, copays, drug list and network may not match this year's.
Is fall the time to change my Medigap plan?
Open Enrollment doesn't apply to Medigap. Applying for a different Medigap plan is allowed all year long. The catch: once your first six-month Medigap window is over, insurers can usually ask health questions and turn you down. And in Texas, no birthday or anniversary rule gives you a way out of those questions.
What if I miss December 7?
If you're in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can still make one change. That chance runs January 1 through March 31. Others need a Special Enrollment Period, like one triggered by a move or by losing coverage from a job. See switching your plan.
Where can I find free, unbiased help in Texas?
Call HICAP (the Health Information, Counseling and Advocacy Program of Texas) at 800-252-9240 for free Medicare counseling. 1-800-MEDICARE and the plan finder on Medicare.gov are free too.
