Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement in Greenville, TX

New retirees in Greenville usually pick one of two paths. Medicare Advantage is a private plan with a single card for all your care, and its premium is often low. A Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, rides along with Original Medicare and pays most of the bills Medicare hands back to you.

Which suits you hinges on a few things. Think about your doctors, your medications and how often you head to Rockwall, Garland or Dallas for care. Also ask yourself whether a higher monthly bill is worth knowing your costs ahead of time.

Local networks

What this means for Hunt County patients

  • Medigap has no network

If a doctor or hospital takes Original Medicare, it takes your Medigap plan as well. That covers Hunt Regional, specialists in Rockwall, Garland and Dallas, and providers anywhere in the country, with no referrals.
  • Advantage depends on the network

Advantage plans sold in Hunt County don't all reach the same places. Check Hunt Regional first, then ask how far the plan reaches into Dallas County. Networks can change every January.
  • Drug coverage works differently

Most Advantage plans come with Part D. With Medigap you pick a separate Part D plan and can shop it again each fall, which often saves money on a pricey brand-name drug.

In Hunt County, most people start by checking that a plan includes Hunt Regional Medical Center. The next question is Dallas County. Many people in Greenville, Caddo Mills and Royse City see specialists in Garland or Dallas, or go to Rockwall. Find out if a plan covers those offices before you weigh the premium. Getting cancer care? Check for your oncologist by name. Veterans at the Greenville VA Clinic can stay with VA care on either path. Since the VA never bills Medicare, think about where you'd go for care outside the VA. See whether your town is on our service areas page.

Leaning Advantage?

Signs Medicare Advantage may suit you

  • Keeping the premium low matters most, and $0 on top of Part B appeals to you
  • The plan's network already includes your doctors and hospital
  • Dental, vision, hearing or gym benefits are things you'd really use
  • You don't mind copays at visits, knowing a yearly cap protects you
  • Nearly all your care happens in Hunt County

Leaning Medigap?

Signs a Medicare Supplement may suit you

  • A steady monthly premium sounds better to you than a copay every visit
  • You see specialists in Dallas County or Rockwall, or spend months away
  • You want any doctor who accepts Medicare, with no referrals
  • You're in ongoing treatment and copays would pile up
  • You're in your six-month Medigap window and can enroll with no health questions

The timing rule people overlook

Every fall during Open Enrollment you can join or change an Advantage plan. Getting a Medigap plan later usually means health questions. With no yearly switching window in Texas, the insurer is free to turn you down. Think about that before you make your first choice.

Total cost

Count the whole year, not only the premium

A $0 premium Advantage plan still costs something. Total the copays you'd likely owe for routine visits, specialists, imaging and any surgery you already have planned. Set that number next to twelve months of Medigap and Part D premiums. A healthy 66-year-old in Celeste who seldom sees a doctor will often spend less on Advantage. Someone with a long-term condition who goes to a Dallas specialist every month will often spend less on Medigap.

We do that math using your real drug list and doctors. A good first step is our Medicare checklist. Our list of mistakes to avoid is worth a read too. Questions

Advantage vs. Medigap questions from Greenville

Could I have both an Advantage plan and a Medigap policy?
No. Medigap pairs with Original Medicare only. Federal law bars anyone from selling you a Medigap policy when they know you're in Medicare Advantage. The one exception is a person dropping Advantage and returning to Original Medicare.
Which costs less in Greenville?
It comes down to how much care you need. With Advantage, the premium is usually lower, often $0 on top of Part B, and you pay copays until you reach a yearly cap. Medigap charges a bigger monthly premium, then you owe very little when you see the doctor. We total up a full year of each with your own doctors and prescriptions.
Will I still owe the Part B premium?
Yes, on either path. Most people pay $202.90 a month for Part B in 2026.
Is drug coverage part of Medigap?
No. No Medigap plan sold now pays for drugs. People with Medigap buy a Part D drug plan on the side. Drug coverage comes built into most Advantage plans.
Can I go with Advantage now and move to Medigap later?
Going back to Original Medicare is allowed during an enrollment window. The Medigap part is harder. Unless you are still in your first Medigap window or hold a guaranteed issue right, the insurer may ask about your health and refuse you. Texas law offers no yearly birthday or anniversary exception.
