Medicare notes for Quinlan
Quinlan got its start around 1892 as a depot on the Texas Midland Railroad, a line owned by the investor Hetty Green. The town was named for George A. Quinlan, general manager of the Houston and Texas Central. A post office opened in 1894, and Quinlan incorporated by 1896. Lake Tawakoni, built in the 1950s about five miles west, brought new business to the area. State Highway 34 runs north to Greenville, and SH 276, called Quinlan Parkway in town, crosses the lake toward Rockwall. Quinlan had 1,414 residents in the 2020 census.
Hunt Regional closed its Quinlan emergency department on September 30, 2025. For anyone near the lake, the closest 24-hour ERs are now Hunt Regional Medical Center Greenville, up SH 34, and Hunt Regional Medical Center Royse City. Everyday care is still close by at Hunt Regional Family Medicine Westlake, 734 E. Quinlan Pkwy. Before you pick a Medicare Advantage plan, make sure the Westlake clinic and both hospitals are in its network, and ask what the plan charges for an ambulance ride.
Every Medicare plan covers emergency care at any hospital, in network or not. With a Medicare Advantage plan, though, follow-up visits and rehab usually need to stay in network, or you pay more. With Medigap Plan G or Plan N, you're covered at any hospital that accepts Medicare, including one in Dallas if that's where EMS takes you. You pay a monthly premium for a Supplement and add a Part D drug plan.
The Connection, run by Senior Center Resources and Public Transit, serves Quinlan and West Tawakoni on weekdays. Riders 60 and up ride free to medical visits, the pharmacy and senior center meals, and once a week to the grocery store. Book a day ahead at (903) 454-1444. The West Tawakoni Senior Center meets Wednesday mornings at Lakeside Community Church, 1056 Hwy. 276, with lunch at noon. For free Medicare counseling, call HICAP at 800-252-9240.
