Medicare notes for Commerce

Commerce started as a trading post that merchants William Jernigan and Josiah Jackson opened where downtown stands today. The town dates its founding to 1872 and incorporated in 1885. In 1894, William L. Mayo moved his East Texas Normal College here from Cooper, and the school is now East Texas A&M University. Mayo is buried on the campus. Commerce had 9,090 residents in the 2020 census and uses two ZIP codes: 75428 for town and 75429 for the university.

Hospital care looks different than it did a few years ago. Hunt Regional closed the Commerce emergency department at 7 p.m. on September 30, 2025, so the closest 24-hour ER is now Hunt Regional Medical Center Greenville on Joe Ramsey Blvd. Hunt Regional Urgent Care Commerce, on Live Oak St., still sees walk-in patients for colds, sprains and other problems that aren't emergencies. When you call 911, Hunt County EMS takes you to Greenville or another hospital, depending on what you need. Medicare Part B covers ground ambulance trips, and each Medicare Advantage plan sets its own ambulance copay, so compare that line when you shop.

Before you join a Medicare Advantage plan, look up your Commerce or Greenville doctor by name, plus each Dallas-area specialist and the hospital you'd pick. Each plan has its own network, and it can shift every January. Medigap plans such as Plan G and Plan N work another way. It pays its share at any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare, with no referrals. You pay a monthly premium for that and add a separate Part D drug plan.

The Connection, the public transit service run by Senior Center Resources and Public Transit, serves Commerce on weekdays, and riders 60 and older ride free to the doctor and the pharmacy. Book a day ahead at (903) 454-1444. The Commerce Senior Center serves lunch at First Baptist Church on Mondays and Wednesdays, and the Commerce Public Library is at 1210 Park St. For free Medicare counseling, HICAP answers at 800-252-9240.

Common questions

Questions we hear from Commerce

Is there still an emergency room in Commerce?
No. Hunt Regional closed the Commerce emergency department on September 30, 2025. The nearest 24-hour ER is at Hunt Regional Medical Center Greenville. Hunt Regional Urgent Care Commerce on Live Oak St. is open for problems that aren't emergencies. In an emergency, call 911.
I still work at the university. Do I have to take Part B at 65?
If you have group coverage through your own current job, or your spouse's, and that employer has at least 20 employees, waiting on Part B usually brings no late penalty. When that job or coverage ends, you get eight months to sign up. Smaller employers follow other rules, so check with us or your benefits office before you skip Part B.
What are the dates for changing Medicare plans in Commerce?
From October 15 through December 7, everyone with Medicare may switch plans or drop drug coverage. That's Annual Enrollment. People who are in a Medicare Advantage plan on January 1 then get one more change before March 31, and going back to Original Medicare counts.
